History park for learning about Kikuchi Castle
Kikuchi Castle is a mountain castle built by the Yamato court, the political power in ancient Japan, in the late 7th century (about 1300 years ago), when the situation in East Asia was very tense. A reference to the castle is found in a history book Shoku Nihongi (Continuation of Chronicles of Japan), which covers the history of Japan in the period of 95 years from 697 to 791. The castle, one of the most important remains in Japan, is designated as a national historical site. The park is being developed as experience-based history park where visitors can learn about the location, size, and structure of the castle. Four buildings including the octagonal drum tower have been rebuilt, based on the result of excavation and research. At Onkososei-kan museum in the park, visitors can learn deeply the history and structure of the castle from its displays and videos. Admission to the museum is free of charge and a museum tour by a volunteer guide can be arranged by two weeks' notice.
