Cooking rice with a traditional hagama pot—staring from splitting firewood
In old days, people all over Japan cooked rice with cook stove heated by burning wood. At Kikuchi Furusato Suigen Koryukan ("Kikuchi hometown riverhead exchange hall"), you experience the life in old days, staring from splitting wood, then making fire, and cook rice in a hagama pot or a traditional broad-brimmed rice-cooking pot, which is made to fit the opening of the oven top to be heated by fire from below. The organizer, a local NGO Kirari Suigen-Mura, takes safety precautions so that young primary school children can also try their hand at cutting firewood. The rice comes from the local paddies irrigated with clear water from the Kikuchi Gorge, one of the 100 pure waters of Japan designated by the Ministry of the Environment. To add to the pleasure of eating rice you cook yourself, there is an optional service of homemade side dishes and pickles prepared by local women using local produce. Reservations required.
