Yamaga Garden Lantern Festival

Elegant attraction of summer in Yamaga

The Yamaga Garden Lantern Festival, one of the best festivals in Kyushu, takes place for two days on August 15–16 every year. Yamaga is a town retaining the flavor of the post town. During the festival, the whole town is decorated with fantastic lightings and a lot of events, for example, fireworks and torchlight parade are organized. The highlight of the festival is the One Thousand Lantern Dance when women dressed in yukata, or light cotton kimono, and wearing Yamaga paper lanterns on their heads dance gracefully to the slow melody of the folk song Yoheho-bushi. The dance is so called because about one thousand women dance in a circular movement around a tower. Layers of lights invite the viewers to a fantasy world. There are special viewing seats on stands for watching the whole circular procession of dancers. For tickets, please check the website of the Tourism Association of Hot Springs of Yamaga. Some seats may sell out quickly.
