Brewery with a tradition dating back to the Edo period
Bishonen (means "good looking boy" in Japanese) was a sake brand of Hinokuni Shuzo company, which had been founded in 1752 in the middle Edo period and placed the product on the market in 1920. Bishonen company, founded in 2012, took over the business from Hinokuni Shuzo. The new company started to make sake in 2014 in a former school building, which it converted to its brewery. The school, Kikuchi Suigen Primary, stood on a hill close to the source of the Kikuchi River, and it was an ideal place because brewing sake requires clear water and clean air. The master brewer and other brewing workers are all locals from Kikuchi and they brew sake from Higo rice grown on the fertile land of Kikuchi. Their sake has an excellent aroma and fruity taste and leaves clean aftertaste. Bishonen sake has gained high reputation in domestic and overseas competitions, winning a Platinum and Gold Awards at France’s Kura Master Sake Fair 2019 and winning a Gold at the U.S. National Sake Appraisal (the oldest sake competition in the U.S.).
