Scenic spot which was named Daikambo (Great Observatory Peak) by Tokutomi Soho
Daikambo is a peak on the northern outer rim of Mt. Aso, located northeast of Uchinomaki Hot Spring district. It was originally called Tomigahana, which means Far See Nose, but in May 1922, a distinguished writer Tokutomi Soho, named the peak Daikambo, or Great Observatory Peak. This natural observation point here gives a magnificent view of the Five Peaks of Aso and the Kuju mountain range, especially when they are viewed over a sea of clouds. The Five Peaks of Aso seen from here are called Nehanzo, as they look like the image of the sleeping Buddha. From the lookout you have a panoramic view over the city of Aso as well. It is also known for beautiful stars that can be observed at night, which makes it a popular destination of astronomy fans.
