Yamaga City Museum

Invitation to the ancient times in the Kikuchi Basin

The museum stores and exhibits about 3,000 items including not only archeological artifacts found in Yamaga City and the Kikuchi Basin but also historical and folklore materials. Of particular interest are a very rare article of ironware having the shape of stone knife, which is the only one found in Japan, and an article of copperware of a whirling shape, one of about 30 similar articles found in Japan. Founded in 1978, this is the second oldest museum in Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a small museum in a two-story reinforced concrete building with a floor area of 681 square meters. The area around the museum is a historical park "Higo Ancient Forest." in which other historical and cultural assets are also located. A 15-minute walk from the museum along the promenade Road to the Ancient Times takes visitors to the historic site Chibusan Obusan kofun (tumuli), known as "decorated tumuli." An old folk house from the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) and a stone-built aqueduct bridge are relocated and rebuilt in the park. The aqueduct is the Otsubo Bridge, which is the second largest aqueduct bridge in the nation.
