Metro Café

Relaxing café in an old house with picture books

The café is run by a citizens' group, Ehon to Ohanashi, Kazefuki Karasu ("picture books and stories, crow playing in the wind"), which operates a small library and organizes events related to picture books such as gatherings for reading to children, lectures by writers, and exhibition of original paintings. It is housed in a 180-year old building, which once was the main part of the shop-cum-family dwelling of a sake brewer, Tencho. The spacious earthen-floored room and beamed ceiling are testimonies to the old days. The café manager offers food and sweets prepared with local produce with as little additives as possible. Yamaga Soup Plate is a low-salt, low-calorie dish made of 15 kinds of vegetables, mushrooms, and beans for health-conscious people who like dining out. This dish is also recognized by the Blue Circle Menu project by Kumamoto Prefecture and others as a suitable meal for diabetics. The café has a library of nearly 3000 books including picture books, which customers can enjoy reading.
