Daikanbo | TRAVEL GUIDE IN KYUSHU, "reQreate"

Daikanbo

Take in a 360-degree panoramic view of Aso’s majestic nature

Located northeast of Uchinomaki Onsen, Daikanbo is the highest peak of Aso’s northern outer rim. The area was originally called Tomi Ga Hana, but renamed Daikanbo by Kumamoto’s famous journalist, Soho Tokutomi. Here you can enjoy a 360-degree view overlooking the city, the five mountains of Aso, and Kuju Mountains. When gazing out from Daikanbo, watch out for the shape of Aso’s five mountains – the form is reminiscent of a sleeping Buddha, thus gaining the name nehanzo (reclining Buddha). You may even encounter a mystic sea of clouds if the weather is just right. Daikanbo is also popular for observing stars, and has souvenir shops and restaurants for stargazers and tourists alike.
