Scenic beauty with the Manai Waterfall, one of the 100 Best Waterfalls of Japan
Takachiho Gorge is known for its dazzling cliffs 80 to 100 meters high and seven kilometers long. The cliffs are made of rare polygonal prism-shaped rocks, which were formed in ancient times when Mt. Aso erupted and a band of pyroclastic flow went down along the Gokase River and then rapidly cooled down, causing a process called columnar jointing. The Gorge was designated as a place of scenic beauty and a protected geologic formation by the Government of Japan on November 10, 1934. Along the Gorge there are many places of interest such as the Manai Waterfall, which is selected as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls of Japan, and the Yaritobi Bridge as well as many legendary places. The promenade built along the gorge provides an access for enjoying these spots.
