Views changing from season to season
At the upstream stretch of the Kikuchi River, the Kikuchi Gorge runs through the area northwest to the caldera of Mt. Aso at the altitude from 500 to 800 m and administratively belongs to Aso City and Kikuchi City. It is on the "List of 100 best forests for forest therapy (shinrin-yoku)," compiled by the initiative of the Forest Agency of Japan. Visitors can stroll along the promenade by the river and enjoy the beautiful scenery that this 1,193 ha gorge offers from season to season: fresh green in spring, cool stream in summer, red and yellow leaves in fall, and rime on trees in winter. The Kikuchi Tourism Association organizes guided tours from April to November. A volunteer guide will take you to beautiful waterfalls and rapids in a 30-minute or 60-minute tour (reservation required). The Kikuchi Gorge official website has a beautiful photo gallery and tourist information including entry restriction due to weather conditions. Be sure to check it before your visit.
