Kamou-no-ike

Largest reservoir in Kumamoto prefecture in natural environment

Kamounoike is a reservoir lying at the foot of a hill northeast of Yamaga City. It is the largest reservoir in Kumamoto Prefecture with an area of 9 ha and can keep up to 500,000 tons of water. On the north side of the reservoir, there are a playing field, promenades, and a lawn area maintained beautifully, where visitors enjoy the seasonal views of cherry blossoms in spring and colorful leaves in autumn presenting a vivid contrast against the lake. This area is particularly busy with flower viewers when the cherry trees are in full bloom. The Ipponmatsu Park ("one pine tree park") close to the reservoir is also worth visiting. In the park there is a sculpture made of three stone windmills each having a stone sail that weighs 1.5 ton and still revolves by the power of natural wind. The park also has a roller slide, a grass sled slope, tennis courts, a camping area, and shops. For history lovers there are round-shape ancient burial mounds, Chausuzuka kofun and Komachizuka kofun.
